Fleet Street

A contemporary public realm for the street that shaped British journalism

Location London, UK

Our design delivers a bold, yet sensitive transformation of Fleet Street, creating a public realm that is greener and more welcoming.

One of London’s iconic and historic streets, Fleet Street serves both as a key route into the City and as a destination in its own right. Working alongside the City of London Corporation and the Fleet Street Quarter BID, the project seeks to rebalance the street in favour of pedestrians and cyclists while supporting its role as a vibrant commercial and cultural destination.

Wider pavements, new planting and street trees, improved seating and a more coherent public realm will create breathing space for pedestrians and encourage a richer variety of everyday social activity.

The design is informed by neuro-sensitive principles, recognising the importance of creating a street that is comfortable, inclusive and restorative. Natural materials, carefully considered lighting, fragrant planting and opportunities for engagement through sound and touch will help shape a more welcoming environment.

As the designs develop, the after-dark experience will be an equally important consideration, ensuring Fleet Street remains attractive, legible and safe throughout the day and evening.

Central to the vision is the creation of a stronger sense of place. An integrated wayfinding and interpretation strategy will help people navigate intuitively while revealing the rich stories embedded within Fleet Street’s history.

References to its legacy of print, politics and public life will be woven subtly into paving, walls, seating and street furniture, creating layers of discovery.
